Bakrum

A co-op horror descent for 2–4 players made in Godot.

Another day, another run into the backrooms. They’re not paying us enough for this. But someone has to do it. Go find and recover the three cameras. Stay together. Stay quiet.

NOTE — this is a prototype. BAKRUM is an early, playable experiment testing whether the idea holds: co-op play, proximity voice chat, procedural backrooms. Expect rough edges, missing polish, and the occasional maze that traps itself. Feedback very welcome.

(bakrum = “back room” in Swedish — and, coincidentally, the room you bake in!)

Development

This took about a week to build in Godot with Claude. We recycled the co-op multiplayer code from the co-op knights game, made a maze generator out of the old dungeon generators from my old rpg project and gutted the previous retro compositor effects to make a new 80s vhs tape post effect.

My world has changed from “this would be cool to make one day” into pretty slick looking mvp multiplayer co-op with proximity voice chat prototype that I can play with the kids – in one week.

Features

Multiplayer over same local wifi or internet. No log-in, no servers. Just using ip-address. Simple friends-list so you don’t have to type every time. Theoretically number of players has no limit but probably best at 2-4.

Procedural maze generation. Host owns the seed and passes to everyone.

VHS Compositor effect featuring banding, wobble, lens distortion and glitches – all synced to the FearMeter.gd so seeing something scary or unreal makes the camera go bananas. Rendered in beautiful low resolution 4:3 aspect ratio.

My own view of the concept of the backrooms is less about being chased by quad sprites (yes, looking at you Roblox) and more about attempting to capture maddening apparitions, illusions and creating distrust of senses – was something there? Am I hearing things? There are threats in the game but they are rare (sometimes a no show depending on the level).
